Getting the lay of the land

A topographic map with contour lines is important for determining optimal positioning of drainage and sewage infrastructure, and seeing how surface run-off will flow.

It also enables planning for enhancing the natural shape of the land for collecting or absorbing water.

Mapping out significant ecosystem elements (e.g. significant flora, habitats, etc) is also important for mitigating impacts and to enable ecosystem restoration efforts.

These will be key tools for site planning.

    • Rainwater

    • Rivers or wells

    • Reuse and recycling systems

    Black and Grey Water Management:

    • Opportunities for reclamation of resources (e.g. compost and gray water from a biodigester)

    Food Systems

    Soil & Food

    Self-sufficiency, food planning, permaculture

How much of the community’s food will be grown on-site? What will be grown?

    Sustaining vs. supplementing

How much will be sourced locally? What goods? Who are the local producers?

How much will be Imported? What foods need to be imported?

How much water is needed? Where will the water come from for irrigation?

How many people will you be feeding?

    Labor?

    Techniques:

    • Permaculture

    • Vertical farming

    • Agroforestry

    Ecological Practices

Identify fundamental practices your community will apply in order to uphold their ecological philosophy:

    • Example – Passive Thermal Design (using or excluding Solar Energy on a seasonal basis, and using passive or low-energy ventilation systems)

    • Example – Community energy generation and storage (e.g. solar power and batteries, mini-hydro and pumped storage, wind turbine and gravity storage, etc.

    • Example – Composting Systems

    • Example – Ecologically Sound Building Methods considering whole of life energy footprint (e.g. modern insulation including double-glazing to mitigate requirements for heating/cooling)

    • Example – Low or Zero Waste Practices

  • Start with the terrain elevation. – topography

  • Design water treatment systems at the lowest point.

    1. Use gravity to move the water

  • Energy can go anywhere

    1. Solar capture anywhere

    2. Wind for single house isnt worth it.

    3. For various it can be worth it for multiple houses.

  • Make a plan draw it out

    1. Start all over again multiple times
